Pamporovo is located in the central, highest part of the Rhodope Mountains. It is situated at the northern and eastern foot of Mount Snezhanka (1926 m above sea level) at an equal distance between Chepelare and Smolyan - 10 km - and 230 km from Sofia. Plovdiv Airport is 80 km away, and Kavala Airport in Greece is 160 km away. The altitude of its center is 1650 m above sea level.
Pamporovo has a nearly 90-year history, starting in 1933, when the Chepelare native N. Chichovski built the first guesthouse here. Today, the resort has expanded with new hotel bases built during the investment fever of the early 21st century towards the village of Stoykite and towards Smolyan to the Raykovski meadows area.
To what initially attracted the first tourists to this part of the mountain - evergreen coniferous forests interspersed here and there with beech trees, colorful meadows, plenty of sunshine, healing climate, fresh air, and coolness in the summer months, later the opportunity for a snowy vacation with all modern amenities for skiers has been added.
Pamporovo is a resort without any avalanche danger and sudden changes in the weather, so the safety and tranquility of tourists during their vacation are guaranteed. Skiers can choose slopes with different levels of difficulty among 50 km of alpine ski runs, served by 8 lifts. All ski slopes in Pamporovo start from Mount Snezhanka (1926 m above sea level) and are equipped with artificial snowmaking systems to ensure skiing even in the conditions of global warming. Despite the whims of the climate, the tourist season here starts in December and lasts until early April.
"Pamporovo" AD is the company primarily responsible for providing services during the winter. It owns hotels, ski schools, ski depots, and its team takes care of the good condition of the slopes and normal functioning.
During the other seasons of the year, the resort offers hundreds of accommodation options, dining, and activities in two areas - hiking and mountain biking. Numerous marked trails and routes offer a variety of slopes, durations of physical exertion, panoramic views, lush meadows, and outdoor picnics.
Mount Snezhanka is included in the list of the 100 national tourist sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union (BTU) and is emblematic with its television tower, from which a panoramic view in all directions can be enjoyed. On clear days, the highest parts of Pirin, Rila, Stara Planina, and some Greek peaks, including Mount Falakro, are visible from the summit.
In Pamporovo, two well-marked hiking trails intersect: the European long-distance path E8 from west to east and the Rhodope eco-trail from north to south. The first begins at the North Sea coast, descends along the Danube River through the Carpathian Mountains in Romania, climbs the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula, Mount Musala, crosses the Rhodope Mountains, and reaches the Bosporus Strait. The second trail leads from Plovdiv along the ridge of Chernatitsa through Mount Mechi Chal, Mount Snezhanka, Smolyan, and Arda, and from there, it runs along the Bulgarian-Greek border to the Elidzhe Pass above the town of Rudozem.
